Chapter 24

“Can we talk?”

Ginny spun around to find Ben staring at her. He had snuck up on her. She glanced around the shop for signs of Ashleigh or Eloise, but couldn’t see them. Her pulse started to race. “You shouldn’t be here. Ashleigh will throw you out.”

“In front of the customers?” he snorted. “Doubt it.”

She knew she had to face him, and she was going to in the next few days, she was working up to it. She hadn’t expected him to come here of all places. Her heart felt as if it was stumbling all over the place inside her chest. Her breathing turned fast and shallow.

“What do you want?”

“I’m sorry. I want to make it up to you. I just want you to know that nothing happened with that woman. I would never do that to you, Ginny.” He tried to take hold of her hands, but she stepped back, the thought of his touching her disgusted her. Things could never be the same between them now. Ever. He had broken the trust.

“A picture doesn’t lie. And whether you ‘did’ anything or not, I’ll never know. Even if you ‘did’ nothing,” she air quoted the ‘did’, “what I saw was bad enough. Even if that naked woman—”

“She wasn’t naked. She was wearing shorts.”

“What?” Ginny couldn’t believe his response, or that he was defending her attire. “Even if she been reading you a bedtime story, naked, like that,” she continued, wrinkling her face in disgust, “what you did was completely unacceptable.”

“I was an idiot.” He punched the display table.

“Stop that!”

A customer stared at them. She remembered that Ashleigh had gone to lunch. Where was Eloise?

“I didn’t sleep with her.”

“You were so drunk, how would you even remember what you did?”

His eyes narrowed with suspicion. “Who told you I was drunk?”

“Does it matter?” she cried. “You told me you wanted one crazy night.”

“That’s not what I meant by it. I wanted to have one night of drinking and playing pool and hanging around with my friends.”

“As if I was going to stop you from any of that after we got married.”

“I miss you, Ginny. I messed things up, I know I did, but I swear to you nothing happened. The guys were just having some fun.”

“The guys? You’re blaming them for this?”

“They were goofing around. They told her to get into bed with me. I was drunk, out like a light. They planted her there.”

She scoffed, her disbelief shooting through the roof. “Your friends ‘planted’ this woman in your bed?”

“Yeah,” he nodded vigorously. “And then they took a picture. How stupid do you think I’d have to be to let something like that happen?”

“About as stupid as you were to want to go to Cooper’s and have your one night of crazy. I’d say you definitely got exactly what you wanted. A night of crazy. Was it worth it?”

He seemed knocked back, his shoulders slumping, and his face downcast. “I’ll make it up to you, Ginny. I swear I will. Nothing did happen.
